Snow Labyrinths & Reverie.

Mindful meditation to create ephemeral art.

2019 Bridgette Meinhold Snow Labyrinth

On my birthday in 2018, I began creating snow labyrinths by stomping out the winding pattern with my snow shoes. It was meant as a way to create something without really creating anything at all. This ephemeral art may disappear in less time than it took me to make - blowing away in the wind or getting covered by new snow. The point is not to create something lasting, but simply to create and enjoy being outdoors. This meditative process takes about an hour and only requires a fresh canvas of snow. I am deliberate in my steps and my path, continually referencing my labyrinth map drawn on my wrist, which is based on the Chartres Labyrinth in France. I have made at least one labyrinth every year since, finding a new location each time based on snow conditions. If you ever happen to find one, please enjoy the labyrinth by following the path in and then the same path out so others may also enjoy the introspective walk.

We made a short film in 2019 about one of my snow labyrinths, which has since been shown over at least 17 film festivals (we lost track) in the US and internationally. This short piece is a nod to our connection with the natural world, human creativity and how we navigate the ever-changing landscape of both.
